Inducing fear and unease with the grotesque and uncanny, horror films entertain with revulsion and surprise. Many of cinema's earliest horror films drew upon gothic tales by authors like Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley and Edgar Allan Poe. The genre has historically followed strong cyclical patterns: monsters ruled the 1930s, the slasher films dominated the 1980s. Conventions (the lone survivor and the haunted house to name only two) abound. Remakes are common. And self-reflexive humor in horror is trending.

Enter into the minds of compulsive freaks, psycho killers and a few particularly nice people who just happen to have something darker lurking beneath the surface.

We'd tell you to lock the door, but what's outside might be the least of your worries.
